I managed to finish 2 PC games this week, Dungeon Siege and Medal of Honor. Dungeon Siege has superb graphics and gameplay but it lacks good scenario. I still think that Vampire Masquerade is a better hack-n-slash RPG as far as the scenario goes. Medal of Honor is probably one of the best FPS of all time it is excellent in almost every aspect, but I must admit that I Max Payne was far more entertaining. It had e wonderful sense of irony that most games lack these days. Still, for me Half-life is the best FPS of all time.

Here are some stuff on SMS, SMPP and Java..

SMS is quite popular in Europe but I don?t think people in the US are familiar with it. So if you are curious here is your answer to what is SMS and some details about where it can be useful.

Some technical details about the SMS format.

A short description of SMPP….

«The Short Message Peer to Peer (SMPP) protocol is an open industry standard messaging protocol designed to simplify integration of data applications with wireless mobile networks such as GSM, TDMA, CDMA and PDC. The protocol is widely deployed in the mobile telecommunications industry. «

Here are the SMPP specs if you are interested about the technical details of SMPP

And here are finally some Java SMPP API’s.

This is the one I’m using for my project. It is Logica’s open source SMPP API. It comes with a SMSC server simulator and a test client application. Although the documentation is almost non existent it is very easy to use and very reliable, I personally recommend it to anyone who want’s to start experimenting with SMPP.

Another one that seems to be popular is the SMPPAPI. This one is also open source. I haven?t used it personally but it should be ok.

And finally another two SMS Java API’s not specific for SMPP. The SMSJDK and jSMS.

We have finally finished the first part of the Vizzavi Hellas SMS Alerts. This is essentially a SMS Application sever that allows Vizzavi to develop and deploy SMS alert applications. SMS Alerts small programs that when given a SMS message containing a specific code string (e.g. WEATHER) respond with a SMS message containing the information that corresponds to the code string. I’m proud to say that I was part of the team that developed the SMS Alerts engine. This has enriched my knowledge on how certain parts of wireless telephony work. It has also made me lose all respect for Greek telecommunications companies but that a very long and sad story. I’m going to add some SMS and SMPP links on my Java Stuff section soon.
